So... this was Dust Town. After settling down on the ground, Sawyer ducked her head and peered up at her ride with squinted eyes, the bird Pokemon stirring up a microscopic dust storm as it flew away. Darn Pidgeot and their need to show off... but she couldn't help but feel thankful towards it and the man who'd escorted her here from Blizzara. Family friends sure came in handy! Throwing her hand up in silent regards to the pair, she shook herself off and looked around for the second time, studying the area more closely now that she had a proper perspective.
It was pretty quaint from what she could tell - there were only a few houses scattered around, hardly any people about, and... was that a tumbleweed? "This place is really stuck back in the sticks, huh" she muttered, kicking some dirt around. Definitely smaller and more abandoned than the city she was used to. Appealing in a way, but she preferred a more active and lively bunch than just a few homely people waltzing around. Was it strategic and easy for beginning trainers to start out in a smaller town? Was that the way the League or whoever was in charge looked at it when thinking of a Trainer first starting out?
Shrugging, Sawyer tugged at her blouse and turned on her heel, approaching the largest building with ease. Surely this steel building was the lab. She just hoped the Professor was inside like she was told and she wouldn't have to set out on a wild Swanna chase to try and find her...

Outside the door, another girl leaned against the frame of the building, her arms crossed and her eyes closed. Her black hair covered part of her eye and she breathed deeply, as if sleeping. Sensing the presence of someone approaching, the girl cracked an eye open and took in the sight of Sawyer, a small smile adorning her lips.
"If you are here for a pokemon, you`ll have to wait. Aunt Conifer just went to go get her new shipment of starters, and she's the professor of this lab. She told me she'll be back in a few minutes." She said, nodding her head at the girl. With a yawn, she stretched her arms out and took in Sawyer's form, smiling at how clean she looked.
"My name is Celeste, I`m here to get a new pokemon too." She said, waking up more from her 'nap'.

Blame her tunnel vision for only wanting to get into the lab and meet the Professor as to why she didn't spot the other girl in the first place. Somewhat startled by the random eye and smile, she blinked a little wildly as the younger girl spoke. Or at least, she assumed the other girl was younger. Sawyer folded her arms and listened closely, arching a brow.
"Aunt... Conifer? So that's her name, then. Professor Conifer." It was both silly and a little eerie that all of the Pokemon scientists' names she'd heard of resembled trees. Too much of a coincidence if you asked her. With nothing better to do, the teen groaned and flomped her back against the wall on the other side of the door, staring up at nothing in particular. Be bored to death, or pry at conversation? Honestly she would have preferred to stay quiet since her mind was running at about a hundred miles a minute, but she eventually found her lips moving and words pouring out.
"So does that mean you're from around here?" she asked. "Any certain Pokemon you're hoping your aunt is bringing along?"

Celeste chuckled at the newcomers antics and looked up, tilting her head.
"I`m actually not from around here. I grew up in Thundera city. As for what pokemon Aunt Conifer is bringing, I can't say I know. She has a friend who runs a high-end Secret Breeding Ground, and she gets her pokemon from her. When I visited, I've seen trainers walk away with normal starters, and with other, more challenging pokemon, like Larvitar and Zorua." She said, thinking about her aunt's myriad of pokemon.
"I hope she gets here soon though, I can't wait!" She said, her excitement showing. As if on cue, a form could be seen in the distance. It came fast, sending a trail of dust behind it, and within a few seconds a large form appeared in front of the girls. It was a Suicune, and a fairly large one at that, reaching up to the top of Celeste's head. Celeste watched in wonder as the Suicune kneeled, letting off a passenger. A tall, black-haired woman in a lab coat stepped off the neck of the Suicune, patting it's neck.
"Thanks so much for the ride, Ranny. That bag is too heavy for me to carry myself, so will you help me get everything settled before you go home?" She asked it. The Suicune, named Ranny, barked an affirmative as they turned to the stunned girls. The woman grinned sheepishly and rubbed the back of her head.
"I`m so sorry, I hope I didn't keep you waiting. Come on in and we`ll get you ready to go. My name is Professor Conifer, and this is my friend, Ranny." She said, pointing to the Suicune before moving to open the door. She and Ranny stepped inside and gestured for the girls to follow. Celeste smiled at Sawyer and grabbed her hand, pulling her into the lab. They walked through the lobby, admiring all the technology inside, guessing their uses for the Professor's research. Too busy admiring the machinery, Celeste bumped into Ranny's rump, earning a stern look from the pokemon before it turned back to it's task, scratching at it's mane with it's back leg and knocking off a large sack. From the sack, the professor dragged out a large crate and opened it, placing 9 pokeballs in a circle on a podium. Then she pulled out three knapsacks and three small boxes and place them on either side of the podium, patting Ranny when she was done.
"Thanks for your help! i really appreciate it, say hi to your breeder for me." She said. Ranny barked again and turned around, running out of the lab at a great speed. Clearing her throat, the Professor called the attention of the new trainers to her, not giving them time to react to Ranny's departure.
"So, do I need to go through the whole spiel or shall we just get right to the part where you get your pokemon?" She asked, more directed at Sawyer than her niece, knowing what the answer would be from the latter.

"Thundera... not too far away from where I grew up near Blizzara." Finally, a smile formed on Sawyer's face. Friend with a secret breeding ground? Hmm... she wondered if this friend of the Professor's was in any acquaintance with her sister. Or if it was her sister? Although she wasn't too sure about the latter, she supposed she'd never know until she met said breeder herself - someone that secret she had a feeling Conifer wouldn't blab about. That topic fizzled away soon enough from her mind though, especially when Celeste mentioned more challenging Pokemon. She loved a variety, and even better, a good surprise.
"Me too. Hopefully it won't be too much--"
Her words were interrupted by a cloud of smoke and a sudden appearance by the Professor herself, but her means of travel left the girl more than baffled. The mane, the horn, the markings.. S-Suicune?! My my, Conifer knew how to arrive in style! Smile growing, Sawyer couldn't help but stare silently at the legendary beast, hardly paying attention to what the older woman had said. The smile remained as she was grabbed and pulled along, focus remaining mostly on the dog until it barked, dropped a bag, and left. Back to the breeder? Yes, one day she'd have to pay that person a visit, if she ever found them in the first place...
Time for seriousness, it seemed. Sawyer straightened up and pushed her feet together, staring right at the Professor with intense amber eyes. "Unless there's really something we, or I, wouldn't already know" she announced, noticing how the woman focused more-so on herself, "then perhaps we could move on to the important part." An eager smile followed as the future trainer tried her best to not look to the pokeballs and other assorted items.

Conifer chuckled as she nodded at Sawyer's enthusiasm, walking to the podium. One by one, she opened 6 of the 9 pokeballs, releasing the creatures inside. Celeste squealed at their cuteness and made to grab a pokemon, only to be held back by her aunt. Celeste pouted and gave Professor Conifer the most pathetic look she could. "B-bu-but, I WANT THEM!" She whined. Conifer rolled her eyes and pulled her niece back. "I know, and they like to be wanted, but we should let our guest get the first pick. Now then, Sawyer, correct? Which will you choose?" She asked, gesturing to the released pokemon. x1 Taken: Mystery Pokemon:

Ah, good. The Professor wasn't going to insist on the technicality mumbo jumbo. Sawyer leaned forward on her toes as Conifer made her way towards the pokeballs, promptly plucked six up into her hand, and then released them before the two trainers. She was just as enthusiastic as Celeste was, albeit, she kept her joy hidden on the inside - the girl at her side was providing more than enough for the both of them at the moment. After a few seconds of watching the Pokemon, Sawyer crouched down to their level to study their behavior for a second.
There were several starters her father had told her might be there, and a few she hadn't been expecting. Zorua was a rarer find, wasn't it? Definitely the more exotic type. But she had to say she was drawn more to the Trapinch and Larvitar. They were both tough and had lovely evolutions, and she grinned especially at the aloof Larvitar. However, Sawyer hummed in delight and stood again, glancing towards Conifer with a tilted head.
"These are very nice Pokemon, but... I happened to notice you didn't open all of the pokeballs. Is there a reason for that?" Her tone was purely curious as she waited for an answer, holding back a snicker at Celeste. "She can go ahead and pick hers, if she wants. I don't mind."

Professor Conifer chuckled as she eyed Sawyer curiously. "I didn't, did I? Well you see, those pokeballs contain pokemon even I don't know of. It's my friends way of messing with me, she sends me these random pokemon who are taught to imprint on the first person to open their pokeballs, meaning that once the pokeball is opened, the pokemon inside belongs to the one who opened it. It's a bit risky, for I have seen trainers walk away with Magikarp and Caterpie by choosing those pokeballs. Though some say it is worth the risk, I have also seen people walk away with legendaries such as Mewtwo and Giratina." She said, smiling wryly as she released her niece who went flying into the pokemon, crashing into the Zorua. The small fox pokemon yelped as it cushioned the impact with its small, body, groaning in response. Celeste gasped as she picked up the Zorua, holding it close. "Oh my gosh! I`m so sorry! Are you ok?" She asked it. Zorua gave her a small smile and squeaked, snuggling into Celeste's chest. Celeste giggled and hugged the small pokemon, earning a chuckle from Professor Conifer. "Well, that's one way to make a choice. Now then, I am not sure about whether or not contests this year are double, single, or mixed performances. because of that you may choose a second pokemon, just to be safe." She said. Celeste blinked for a moment before looking over the pokemon. Totodile looked like a strong pokemon, a real winner. But a quick glare from the water type told her it was a no-go. She looked at the rest of the pokemon and didn't feel any sort of 'connection' with them. Then she turned to the pokeballs on the podium. Carrying her Zorua in one arm, she reached out for one of the pokeballs, grabbing it. Turning it over in front of her eyes, she gripped it tightly and smiled, tossing the ball high. "I choose you, whoever you are! Come out and meet me!" She called. The ball opened and a bright, white light shot out, taking form in the middle of the room. It was small, and red, with a green underbelly. It's yellow eyes blinked a few times before focusing on Celeste. "Veni?" It said. Celestes eyes widened at the pokemon that appeared before her and her mouth twitched. Professor Conifer's brows furrowed as she moved to stand next to Sawyer. "Oh boy, this could mean trouble. Cover your ears!" She said, bracing herself just as Celeste let out a high pitched squeal. "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! You're so cute!!!!" She yelled, running to her new Venipede and scooping it up to hug. The little bug pokemon looked confused for a moment before it cuddled back into her. She hugged her new pokemon tightly before setting them down, tilting her head curiously at them. "I`ll call you Vulpina." She said, poking Zorua's nose. Turning to her Venipede, who eagerly awaited a name, Celeste smiled and picked it up, holding it in front of her. "And I`ll call you Pendra!" She declared, earning a happy warble from the Venipede. Professor Conifer smiled at her niece, happy to see her so happy with her new pokemon, before turning to Sawyer. She gently pushed the girl towards the remaining starters and nodded at her. "It's your turn. Since you are going to be a traditional trainer, you get only one this time. Choose wisely." She said, crossing her arms and waiting for Sawyer to make her choice. Pokemon Obtained; Celeste: Pokemon Name: Vulpina (Zorua) Gender: Female Pokemon Personality: Mature, Cuddly, Independent. "..Magikarp and Caterpie? Oh wow.. um, talk about disappointment, especially if you told those trainers beforehand that they could have had a legendary instead." And that fact itself was still overwhelming the pee out of Sawyer. To think that this breeder could have bred, captured, contained - however they'd got ahold of one - a legendary and then trusted a starting trainer to raise it? To keep it under control and form a healthy bond? Giratina itself was quite a beast of legend.. but then again, maybe such elitist Pokemon weren't as rare as she thought. The Varaia region was more prone to harbor legends, for whatever reason. Shaking her head free of thought, Sawyer returned to the conversation at hand.
"Still, a Magikarp, if raised well, turns into quite the opponent when evolved. And does Caterpie. So if I end up getting one of those while choosing this Mystery Pokemon.. then I shouldn't care. Besides, a Pokemon that develops such a strong bond with me as soon as it looks at me is sure to make a relationship that I'll always cherish." The girl actually laughed at herself then. Good Arceus, what was she, twenty? She was talking like some sort of... well, she didn't know what. Things like that were things she didn't normally say aloud.
Her mouth went agape when she saw Celeste plow into the Zorua, making her choice and then moving on to choose an unopened pokeball as her second partner. So.. she was going to be a coordinator? Interesting. Contests were something she'd never seen much of, but they required lots of training and skill nevertheless. On cue she held her ears when the younger girl squealed and picked up the Venipede, then hobnobbed around with the pair, giving them nicknames and cooing her heart out.
At that point she'd focused solely on Professor Conifer and the remaining mystery balls as she was pushed along, picking a light purple sphere up in her hand. This one... yeah, that felt right. Tossing it into the air, her bright eyes widened, trying to figure out what the silhouette was that formed in the red beam.
"I choose you!"

From the beam, a small form appeared. It was little, and green, and had big red eyes. Looking up at Sawyer, the little pokemon smiled and wagged it's stubby tail. "Axew!" It chirped, greeting her warmly. The Axew walked to Sawyer and hugged her ankle, looking up at her with it's big red eyes as if begging her to let him go with her. Pokemon: Axew Gender: Male Pokemon Personality: Quiet, affectionate, sheepish. Pokemon Level: 5 Move Roster: Scratch, Leer Post Count at Obtaining: 6 Professor Conifer smiled as she watched the new trainers get to know their pokemon, gliding to the podium to recall the other pokemon and get the bags. She cleared her throat and called her new trainers attention. "You are not done choosing just yet. Since you know why you are here, let's get to the part where we get our pokedexes and bags. You may choose any color you like and any bag style. When you have picked your bag and Pokedex, open one of the small boxes next to the bags and load them up into the bag." She instructed. When the red light faded, Sawyer beamed. An Axew! This was just as, if not more, exciting than a legendary in her mind. A little Pokemon that was rare, powerful, had several evolutions, and was already devoted. He was perfect! Kneeling down, the girl picked up the little dragon and held him away from her face, examining him with wide happy eyes as if she were a little kid looking at a puppy for the first time. Axew simply wiggled and wrapped his little paws around her hands, wiggling to try and get closer for a hug.
"Normally I wouldn't give Pokemon nicknames, but... you're an exception. I think I'll call you Luca. Sound good?" The dragon type chirped again, smiling from... tusk to tusk. Sawyer chuckled, sat him down, and inclined her head back to the Professor. Time for the Pokedexes, then! She'd had her eye on one since they'd been set out, and when the woman finished talking, she moved forward and swiped the orange one, picked up the bag with the most straps, and proceeded to stuff items inside.
"Thanks! Where do we go from here, Professor?" she mused, watching as Axew peered out from behind her leg to look at Celeste's Pokemon. "Axew?"

Professor Conifer smiled at the new trainers as they named their pokemon and settled their items together. Celeste grabbed the purple pokedex and the shoulder-strap bag and loaded everything up, grabbing her chin in thought after Sawyer asked her question.
"Well, the first gym is in Gustella town, I think. I know that a contest is there for sure. Professor?" She asked. Professor Conifer nodded as she grabbed a Town Map, handing it to her niece.
"Correct, that is just past route 801. Use this to help you get around. I assume you two are going to travel together?" She asked. Celeste looked over her shoulder at Sawyer and stared at her, smiling before turning back to her aunt.
"Well, for right now maybe. We'll see how things go once we get to Gustella, right Sawyer? Well, see ya Aunty Con! Let's go you guys!" She said as Vulpina and Pendra took either shoulder while their trainer ran out, dragging Sawyer and Luca out with them. Professor Conifer shook her head and chuckled, walking to one of her computers.
"Oh my, what have I unleashed on the Varaia Region?" She said, pulling up a report on Axew evolution, only to find there was not much info. Well, Sawyer's pokedex would soon take care of that.
