"Hello?" Ryan had set off from his house the previous day. He turned down rides on Rapidash, and he refused to go on the back of a Pidgeot. After the incident, he'd hated Flying-type Pokemon, and often refuse to even go near one. His father offered to drive him, he even refused that. Why? He wanted to see the types of being that he would be getting. After a long day, Ryan finally arrived at Conifer's lab in Dust Town. Shyly, he opened the door and walked to Conifer. "Is this where I get my first starter?", he asked.

Jordan briefly thanked the man and went back on his way. It was really annoying being the stranger in town. The lab was probably the most prominent building in the place and he still had to ask for directions to find it. The locals seemed accustomed to strange kids wandering in looking for the famous Professor Conifer though; the individual he had questioned didn’t so much as blink when he asked. It made sense for such a place to get so much traffic though. It wasn’t like you could just pop into your local grocery store and ask about getting a shiny new pokemon.
Much to his surprise, the door was already ajar when he arrived. Back home that was basically how you donated to charity the hard way, but maybe a smaller town like this didn’t have to worry about burglary so much? That was an interesting thought. Jordan had been here less than an hour and already the culture shock was setting in. As he approached he heard voices within. This was not terribly surprising, considering this was some kind of research facility and presumably staffed by people who would, in fact, use words. But this voice was not one of an adult, and the subject was on pokemon. From the sounds of it he had found the right place after all.
He stepped through the doorway, one hand crammed in a jean pocket while the other gave a small nonchalant wave. “Uh, actually I’m here about that too,” he said, banking off of blond kid’s inquiry. “So like, if this is where I can do that then that’d be cool.”

Oh, good! She'd been waiting for this day's trainers to arrive. Still in slippers and clutching a cup of coffee, for she'd decided to take a bit of a lazy day, Professor Conifer greeted Ryan and then a second person, Jordan, with a warm smile. "Welcome, welcome. Yes, this is where you'll be meeting your partners!" she exclaimed, eventually moving to sit down in her rolly chair. "Right here we have pre-picked starters for you to choose from, featuring regions away from Varaia" she began, motioning to a pen containing six small creatures, "and there on the podium are Mystery Balls. Surely you know that the pokemon in there are unknown and therefore, once you choose one, you can't go back. We've had Feebas to Mew pop out, so you really never know what's going to happen."
Taking a breath, she looked to the boys once more and took a sip of coffee. "Take your time; no rush. Breeders and Coordinators may choose two pokemon - Trainers and Racers must take only one. Good luck!"

Ryan stared at the Pokemon. They were all so awe-inspiring, he could not pick. He saw the little Larvitar and the Zorua as his top choices. He looked at both of them, before noticing the mystery balls. He picked the center mystery ball, and threw it, waiting for a figure to come out. Eventually, a figure did come out. It was a...

From the pokeball burst an usual shape - one the Professor certainly hadn't seen yet. The crescent turned this way and that, the eyes set on either side of her head scanning the room before locking on her new trainer, a happy chime sounding as she levitated over. Suddenly, on her way there, the Lunatone froze and snapped all attention over to the Professor, eyes widening. Sloooooowly she crept over, flipping upside down as she sniffed towards her coffee. "Uhm... no no, this is not for you" Conifer chuckled, turning away.
Oh well. SHE WOULD HAVE HER SUGAR SOMEWAY... SOMEHOW! Deciding that she truly was hungry and not just in absolute need of sweet things, Lunatone floated back over to Ryan and bumped him. "Tooooone?"

He stepped in as the good professor gave her spiel. How often must she have given these talks? When every new trainer - and apparently breeder, racer, and coordinator at that - had to go through you a slow life probably wasn't possible. At least she seemed to be handling it well, he supposed.
The menagerie before him was quite the selection. The lean was slightly toward fire but it was hard to tell, really. From his layman's perspective this was a pretty balanced gallery to choose from. Still though, it was hard not to succumb to the allure of the mystery ball. In fact the guy ahead of him went ahead and did just that, popping out what looked like a pretty good find.
Jordan gave the pen a glance, inwardly weighing his options. The Zorua was tempting. Like, really tempting. But......
In the end he gave into temptation. Approaching the mystery balls on display, he took the leftmost one and popped it open. Moment of truth I guess.

Ryan bent down to the Lunatone, and picked it up. He reached into his pocket and grabbed some candy. He lay it out in his hand, and said, "I name you Candy.". He rubbed his hand across the Lunatone.
The Lunatone blinked affectionately, nibbling on the blue and red buttons on Ryan's hand. She pecked on Ryan's hand, and looked up at Ryan...
Ryan walked to the Pokedexes. He said to Conifer, "I'm having the black Pokedex, and the first bag.". He did as he said, then he picked up his Lunatone and walked out. The Lunatone looked up at Ryan again, and said "Luuunnnnaaaa!". She opened her mouth, and Ryan put some more buttons into her mouth. The Lunatone smiled, and said, "Luna... Tone...". She closed her eyes and went to sleep.

Conifer noticed Jordan looking at her from the corner of her eye, but paid no attention to it as she waited to see what the other Mystery Ball had in store. This time, a very sound little pokemon emerged, shaking herself off before looking around with three sets of eyes. Where... where was she?! This was not her previous home! Frowning, the bee buzzed and huffed, antennas crossing as if they were arms to suggest her current hatred for the situation. Hmph! However, when she looked over to Jordan, she seemed to be... a bit more interested. Slowly, Combee floated over to him, tapping one of his hands with her wing as if to say 'word' and then fly off, trying to make it look like she had no interest in him at all. Of course, every few seconds she looked over her shoulder to see what he was doing...
"Dont forget the items and such when you guys leave" the Professor reminded them, smiling at their new pokemon. "Good luck on your journey!"

The strange, winged, oddly shaped creature that emerged from the ball was not what Jordan had expected. He blinked as the Combee took form, uncertainty momentarily taking root. It - she, rather, if that red mark was any indication - seemed a bit confused upon release. Was this the first time she had seen the lab? Where exactly did all these pokemon come from anyway?
At some point during his scrutiny the bee pokemon took notice of him. She floated over, seemingly unaware that Jordan was eyeing her with equal curiosity through his tinted eyewear. There was a moment of quiet tension between the two, with only the gentle hum of the Combee’s flight for ambience. He couldn’t help but wonder if there was something he should be doing? Breaking the ice? Holding his new pokemon and coddling it like a Chihuahua? Thankfully, the hexagonal critter made the first move.
He blinked, then stared at his hand as the little thing hovered off. Did she....bump fists just now? His lips parted as he stood there, unsure. Slowly a smirk formed, and then a low chuckle rose from his throat. This was seriously the best pick he could have gotten. The Combee blinked in confusion now, unsure of what to make of this reaction. Jordan approached, his poker face marred by his amused grin. “Hey, I like your style. You up for wreckin’ some chumps or what?” Her eyes momentarily lit up at that prospect as she gave an enthusiastic buzz in response. Clearly she wasn’t terribly displeased with her choice of trainer either. “Sweet. I’ll grab my loot and we’ll hit the road.”
Jordan moved for the “loot” in question, selecting the fourth bag for its seemingly unimposing nature as well as the yellow pokedex. Nothing to get hung up on or anything. He fastened his new back around his waist, gave the professor a casual “seeya around” wave of thanks, and set off, pokemon zipping behind. “By the way,” he added, “your new name’s Tara now. You cool with that?” He wasn’t completely sure why Tara, but it was just the vibe he got. This Combee felt like a Tara, plain and simple. She produced a tone of satisfaction either way, so clearly she didn’t have any problems with it.
